"Drawbridge"

For almost half a century, the Pascagoula drawbridge has welcomed people at the west entrance to the city of Pascagoula.  Initial crossings cost twenty-five cents for cars and later ticket books were sold containing passes to cross the bridge with tolls used to pay for the construction.  The bridge has seen many sights over the years.  It has seen ships being built at nearby Ingall’s (Northrop Grumman) Shipyard and watched those ships sail out to sea to defend our country.  It has carried many workers to their jobs and many servicemen to Naval Station Pascagoula-many frustrated at times when the drawbridge was stuck!  It has seen the shrimp fleet head out for their catch as well as pleasure boats speeding to the islands for a day of fishing and fun.  A UFO abduction was even reported below it’s south side in 1973.  The drawbridge was replaced with a new high rise necessary to accommodate the heavy flow of growing traffic in 2003.  Some of us will miss the old drawbridge.
